As part of a series of City of Camas utility upgrades announced in 2019, Tapani, Inc. began mobilizing equipment and crews the week of February 10 to begin work on the Lacamas Creek Sewer Pump Station project (see graphic for project limits). This project includes the construction of two separate sewer lift stations – the larger station will be located on the north side of NE 3rdAve, west of Lacamas Creek, next to the Lacamas Trailhead Parking Lot. The second smaller lift station will be located on the south side of 3rd Loop between Crown and Sumner Street. Access to the trailhead parking lots on NE 3rd Avenue and NE 3rd Loop will be restricted periodically throughout the 12-month-long project.
Both pump stations will require installation of discharge piping to be installed on E. 1st Ave and Joy Street, and on 3rd Loop and NE 3rd Avenue. The new pipelines on NE 3rd Ave will require significant traffic control measures and multiple flaggers such that traffic on 3rd will be reduced to one-lane in each direction at times. The sidewalk on the north side of NE 3rd Ave will be removed and replaced with this project to accommodate a new gravity sewer main. The sidewalk will be signed as closed during this period between NE 3rd Place and NE Crown Road. Also, NE 3rd Loop will be closed between the intersection at Crown Road and NE Sumner Street for several weeks while work is performed in that area. Camas Staff have coordinated this work with the Camas School District. They expect to move the existing bus stop closer to NE 3rd Ave and NE Sumner Street to avoid having it near our work area.
This is a complex and lengthy project that will last about a year. However, the underground excavation and new sewer pipeline installations will be the most disruptive. The contractor’s current schedule indicates this work should be completed by late Spring of 2020. Camas engineering staff intend to communicate with Camas citizens in and near the about various scheduled construction activities by collectively using e-mail, mailers, social media, walk and knock, and reader boards for the duration of the project. In addition to the lift stations and new pipelines, the project will include milling and placing of new asphalt pavement on E. 1st Avenue from Joy Street to NE 3rd Avenue, and on the northerly west-bound lane on NE 3rd Ave between E. 1st and Crown Road.
